Residential Energy Efficiency Standards Updated for 2023
On January 1, 2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced new regulations for minimum SEER (seasonable energy efficiency ratio) rating and testing requirements. The minimum required efficiency increased by 8-10%.
If you are purchasing a new heat pump, the update applies nationwide. Newly manufactured heat pumps must have a SEER2 rating of 14.3.
Updated ratings for air conditioning systems will be applied regionally. If you live in the Southeast region, which includes the state of Oklahoma, newly manufactured and installed equipment must have a SEER2 rating of 14.3 (systems below 45,000 BTU) or 13.8 (systems 45,000 BTU and above). If you live in the North region, which includes the state of Kansas, the new requirements don’t take effect until the inventory of existing 13 SEER (13.4) air conditioners has been cleared out.
